"Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas."

At Gillas Lane, we recognise that mathematics is essential in everyday life and, with this in mind, we ensure that children develop a positive and enthusiastic attitude towards maths that will stay with them throughout their lives. A growth mindset, where all children know they can achieve.
We strive to provide children with rich learning tasks which allow them to investigate, reason and problem solve in real, exciting and meaningful contexts. We would like children to deeply understand maths concepts and we achieve that through a concrete and pictorial approach, before they complete more abstract tasks. Children ‘do’ and ‘see’ the maths so they understand better.
Our curriculum is designed to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum which aims to ensure all pupils:
- Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics so that they are efficient in using and selecting the appropriate written and mental methods, underpinned by mathematical concepts.
- Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems with increasing sophistication, including in unfamiliar contexts and to model real-life scenarios.
- Can reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry and develop and present a justification, including in unfamiliar mathematical language.
Children in Early Years are exposed to maths in all areas of their play and in the environment, where staff skilfully exploit all opportunities. From Year 1 to Year 6, all children have a tightly structured daily 90 minute maths lesson which is fast paced and engaging.
